Gym Diaries

Every time I enter my gym, my eyes look for familiar faces around me. Day in and day out we subconsciously connect with one another. Its like white noise – these people are always there in the background…………each one on their own journey of self-discovery, and acceptance.

There is a gentleman who is always reading the paper by the coffee machine when I enter the gym. He is in gym clothes but I never see him working out. He reads, has a cup of coffee and leaves. I guess it’s enough to convince his wife that he worked out J

I always bump into two ladies dressed in impeccable sports wear, touching up their make up. I normally gag looking at their 20 - inches waistline. But then I wonder why are they coming to the gym? They never make eye contact, talk only to each other in a language that does not sound familiar at all. May be they are trying to fit in and look like people around them – who knows.

Then there is a lady who eats oranges in the locker room and chats on the phone before she heads to the treadmill for exactly 30 mins and then she is back to eating oranges!

A young mother who has just delivered twins always arrives with chipped nail polish, dark circles and empty eyes. I wonder what her story is like.

As I follow Vaishali into my routine, I always end up making eye contact with a young lady who is more HEALTHIER than me – as if to say …………. Sailing in the same boat?

And then the sweating begins!
